Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria serve as a guide to the candidates for the completion of the Application Form and will also be used for the evaluation of the eligibility of the applications.

The Cyprus Tourism Organisation is inviting the submission of entries from Destinations for the EDEN competition on the theme “Tourism and Local Intangible Heritage”. To be eligible, every destination shall:

1. Have a visitor density rating from “low” to “very low” in comparison with the national average. Therefore a destination must have no more than 16,000 overseas holidaymakers per annum.

2. Organise on a regular basis (e.g. annually) a specific event (e.g. a fair, exhibition, festival, themed exhibition, visit opportunities and trails; tourists’ participation in the activities, traditions and lifestyles of local people, etc.) focused on their local intangible assets. The event should be sustainable (i.e. it shall be coherent with the three pillars of sustainability: economic, environmental and socio-cultural) and comply with at least three of the following conditions:

a. represent a new tourism offer (having being proposed for the first time preferably later than 2000)

b. show an important impact on the local economy

c. be organised by the most relevant local stakeholders in close partnership

d. be an integral part of the local tourism strategy

e. be organised outside the tourist high season

3. Manage its own tourism offer, in such a way as to ensure its social, cultural and environmental sustainability
