Solea Valley
The Solea Valley is situated along the main
Lefkosia-Troodos road, some 56 km from Lefkosia and Lemessos. The valley
includes the picturesque Galata and Kakopetria Villages.
Kakopetria Village is a popular hill
resort with a beautiful central square and an old quarter where the
traditional architecture has been preserved.
The Church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, a
UNESCO site built in the 11th Century with wall paintings from the 11th
to 17th Centuries, is located here. The Mesostratos Tavern (tel
22-924-700), in the old quarter, is a traditional restaurant accredited
by the CTO’s Vakhis scheme for quality traditional cuisine.
Galata Village includes four painted
churches from the 16th Century: Agios Sozomenos, Archangel Michael,
Panagia Podhitou and Agia Paraskevi.
The Hani Kalliana is a traditional Inn,
which has been restored. This building is open to the public, and is an
interesting illustration of life at the time.
The Panagia Asinou Church is a UNESCO
World Heritage Site dedicated to the Virgin of Phorbia, with wall
paintings from the 12th to 17th Century. The Church is located some 5km
from Nikitari off the Lefkosia-Troodos road. |
